Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at Eastern Mediterranean University. In 2026, at the age of 38, he was appointed to full professor — among the youngest to reach that rank in his field at the university. His work lies at the interface of quantum gravity, cosmology, particle physics, and astrophysics, with a particular interest in quantum gravity and its consequences for black hole physics and cosmology beyond their standard models.
His research is focused on understanding and constraining modified gravity theories through the observable properties of black holes and the evolution of the Universe. He has developed and refined analytical methods that are now among the most widely used for computing Hawking radiation, gravitational lensing, and the shadows of black holes. Across more than 200 publications, he has studied a broad range of problems in general relativity — from black hole thermodynamics, wormholes, and compact stars to Hawking radiation and cosmological inflation — work that draws heavily on techniques from mathematics and scientific computing. He has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in the Stanford University / Elsevier releases every year from 2020 to 2024. He has been named a 2023, 2024, 2025 Highly Ranked Scholar’ by ScholarGPS - one who ranks in .05% of 30 million scholars worldwide, based on his exceptional productivity, noteworthy impact and quality of scholarly work.
